Electricity rates by state

Residential electricity price table, cheapest to most expensive

The U.S. Energy Information Administration publishes average residential electricity prices per kWh in its Electric Power Monthly (Table 5.6.A, July 2026). Your utility's exact rate varies within your state; check your bill's "price to compare" for a closer estimate. For context, a 1,500 W space heater running 8 hours a day costs $66.84 per month at the U.S. average.

Electricity rates by state, ranked cheapest to most expensive

This is every state's residential rate in cents per kWh, ordered lowest to highest. The spread is wide: the cheapest power in the U.S. is 12.72¢/kWh in Louisiana, and the most expensive is 48.00¢/kWh in Hawaii — 3.8 times as much for the same kilowatt-hour. The bar length is the rate, and the $66.84/mo mark is what a 1,500 W space heater costs per month at each rate.
